Simple Magic Tricks For Kids
Magic For Kids
Childrens magic is a genre of magic that has the sole intention of entertaining children. When performing simple magic tricks for kids at parties, churches, schools or libraries, you should be wary that your audience is not as developed mentally as an adult audience so you should adapt your routines to suit the audience. It is often said that intelligent people are the easiest to fool because they don’t expect a magician to use a simple gimmick. On the other hand, a child is hard to fool because they watch closely but do not listen to the magicians attempts to misdirect them.
Why perform simple magic tricks for kids?
When referring to “simple” in this context, I am not referring to the method, I am referring to the effect. The effect itself must be simple. When performing, you have to be aware that children may not fully understand the concept of the trick if the trick is too complicated. This is why you need to keep simple the magic tricks when performing for kids. The child needs to be able to describe in one sentence what happened in the trick. (for example, “the ball changed colour”, “the rabbit vanished” etc). Climaxes that are too complicated may not be so easily understood and therefore the effect is lost.
Similarly, multi-phase tricks with climaxes in quick succession may not be as suited to children as some others. Perhaps one of the exceptions to this is a “cups and balls” routine, which seems to be universally popular.

Cups and Balls – one of many simple magic tricks for kids (and adults)
Paul Daniels popularised the saying “KISS A TIT” – keep it simple stupid and think it through. This perhaps applies more when performing magic for children more than in any other situation.
Children don’t have the same social filters that adults do, children will have no delay in pointing out any error or inconsistency that you make during your performance so be careful to be well rehearsed when you are performing simple magic tricks for kids.
Riffle Shuffle
The riffle shuffle is one of the most common ways of quickly shuffling a deck of cards thoroughly. Although this shuffle does have elements of flourishing in it, many spectators can perform this shuffle and as such it is not perceived as suspicious by an audience.

Overhand Shuffle / Biddle Shuffle
The overhand shuffle is a very common way of shuffling cards.

It is also the most likely way that a spectator would shuffle a deck of cards. For this reason, magicians who wish to disguise their skills with cards often perform this shuffle as opposed to more complex shuffles to help subtly suggest to an audience that they are not achieving the effects through complex sleight of hand. Performing fancy shuffles and cuts can be a give away!
Biddle Grip
Biddle Grip is a common way of holding a deck of cards when performing magic tricks. It is usually performed with your dominant hand.

Mechanics Grip
Mechanics grip is simply the name given to the standard way of holding a deck of cards.
When performing magic, you usually perform mechanics grip in your non-dominant hand. You may hold the a deck of cards like this already without realising that it had a name!

Magic tips and advice for magicians

The magic tips in this article are intended to be helpful for anyone learning the art of magic.
Magic, unlike what many people would think, is not all about the secrets behind a trick. Learning a lot of magic secrets does not automatically make you a magician. There is a lot more to it than that. Many people get into magic for the wrong reasons and if you get involved with magic simply to discover how a trick works, you’re probably going to be left disappointed. However if you start performing magic and get into magic because you enjoy entertaining people, you will be far more likely to get a lot more out of the hobby.
One of the most important aspects of performing is preparation. The old saying goes “failure to prepare is preparation for failure”. This is never so more true than in magic. Nothing ever fails quite so hard as a magic fail! So, before you perform, make sure you have practiced it several times so that you know that you will not make a mistake when it comes to performance. Make sure that you have mastered any sleight of hand needed to perform the trick and know what you are going to say. Its also wise to be prepared for impromptu performances. One of the best magic tips regarding impromptu performances is to always carry some small props with you at all times in case you are asked to perform such as a deck of cards or some coins.
When performing magic, you need to be aware of your character. Too many magicians appear smug when performing. This is a rather unlikable character trait and should be avoided where possible. Do not assume that because the audience may not be aware of the methods behind your magic tricks that they are unintelligent. Be careful never to patronise your audience and be humble and your audience will warm to you better. If your audience likes you the likelihood of you being heckled is much less.
You should always avoid complex procedures. The magic will be lost if you tax the patience of memory of your audience. Never repeat an effect. Part of the appeal of a magic tricks is a surprise. If you repeat a magic trick, you cannot create surprise the second time round. For the same reason, you should never explain to a spectator what you are about to accomplish. Finally, always listen to the magic tips and advice given to you by others who have more experience than yourself.

Money magic tricks – What & Why
Money magic tricks with coins and with banknotes prove very popular with both magicians and spectators alike. But why is this? Many magicians like to use money as a prop when performing magic tricks for a variety of reasons.
Coins in particular are very popular props for magicians to use. They are readily available and there is a wide variety of magic tricks that can be performed with them. Like card tricks, there are a wide variety of skills involved and tricks range from self working tricks to ones involving complex and sometimes difficult sleight of hand moves.
Emotional response to money magic tricks
Everyone these days, like it or not, is obsessed with money. Our lives revolve around it. Many of us dream of having lots of it. Its both a status symbol and the key that can be used to obtain virtually anything desirable in your life.
Perhaps, because of this, when money is used in magic tricks, spectators invest a little more emotions in the effect than they normally would with a card trick for example. Especially if you are using money belong to them. For example, if you borrow a banknote from someone, and do a torn and restored banknote trick, chances are at the moment the spectator believes that their bill is genuinely being torn, you will get a strong emotional response from that spectator. The spectator cannot help but react emotionally if they believe their money is being destroyed because they see it as a desirable item of value that belongs to them that is being destroyed.
It is the emotional investment behind money magic tricks that makes them so powerful. If you compare that with a torn and restored playing card, whilst the spectators may be impressed with the effect, the emotional reaction will not be as strong as the item being destroyed is of little interest to them.
